10 Minutes to Healthier Cells – and a Healthier You by Stacy Geant Hughes, Bergen County Moms

My sister recently sent me a podcast that was mind-blowing.  It’s our usual genre - health and wellness - and it focused on why keeping our cells, specifically our mitochondria, in top shape, is the key to a long, healthy life.  One of the big messages I think everyone needs to hear on repeat is that so much of our physical and mental well-being is within our own control and that there are simple things we can do every day to ensure we continue to have supercharged cells that help us live fulfilling and healthy lives.

One important component of healthy cells is the sun! Sunlight can lead to increased energy levels, better mental clarity, and a reduced risk of various chronic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. During the First World War, military surgeons routinely used sunlight to heal infected wounds. And there have been a host of new studies showing how exposure to sunlight can kill viruses, further evidence of the sun's life-giving qualities.

Evidently, a little goes a long way. Some experts say a mere 10-15 minutes a day of sunlight is enough to produce the benefit in your cells!

So what can you do outside for 10-15 minutes? How about a walk around your yard to pick weeds? I could do this for 15 minutes every day until the end of August and still have more weeds. Or walk to the end of the block and back? Offer to take your neighbor’s dog for a walk! Or maybe even some lawn chair Pilates? I’ll have more on that next week…..

I don't know about you, but I'm adding "Get Sun" to my daily TO DO list. Little effort and huge impact.

What could be easier?
