After Renovations

Many homes may hold the potential to be a space you love, but they don’t often start out that way—or even evolve into it over time.  Renovation can be the answer, but knowing where to begin can be overwhelming. Envisioning the full potential of your home isn’t always easy, which is why working with a professional designer can make all the difference. The right expertise can transform a not-quite-right space into a beautifully functional and personalized retreat.

Before Renovations

As an example, we share the story of a recent kitchen renovation in Oakland, NJ, that was designed and executed by Ulrich, Inc. The home, built in 2004 in the Ramapo Reserve, had a kitchen that presented several challenges: poor access to the dining room, limited refrigeration and storage, and isolation from adjacent spaces. Ulrich Designer Julia Kleyman developed a plan that not only solved these issues but also created a seamless and elegant design.

3D Rendering

To help the homeowners visualize the transformation, Ulrich provided photo-realistic 3D renderings, allowing them to see the new layout, cabinetry, finishes, and appliances before construction began. Once the plans were approved, the Ulrich team got to work.

New Butler's Pantry

A key change was relocating the passage from the kitchen to the dining room.  This created space for a new butler’s pantry which includes extra storage, refrigerator-freezer drawers, and a built-in ice maker. A dropped ceiling, cleverly housing HVAC ducting, visually connects the dining and kitchen spaces while adding architectural detail. The butler’s pantry also features polished stainless-steel drawers, which provide bar utensil storage while reflecting light beautifully off the mirrored backsplash.

To better integrate the kitchen and family room, the Ulrich team constructed an elegant archway between the two spaces. This design element adds sophistication while maintaining a subtle separation, and is enhanced by small built-in lights for ambient illumination.

The homeowner also desired both a large island and a breakfast table. Ulrich designed a custom sapele mahogany tabletop, semi-attached to the island, that comfortably seats four and facilitates easy conversation between the kitchen and family room.

For a clean and refined, yet inviting aesthetic, the new design features white cabinetry, honed Danby marble countertops, and a soft gray painted island that balances elegance with warmth. A Calacatta stone and ceramic mosaic backsplash tie the entire look together.
