What Is the Infinite Game in Parenting? By Fern Weis, Parent + Family Recovery Coach, Bergen County Moms

Simply put, the infinite game is the bigger picture. When it comes to parenting, understanding the bigger picture makes a huge difference on your positive influence and impact on your children's future.

Most of the focus on our kids is about their achievements, grades, talents, etc. The measurable things.

What's measurable is not guarantee-able. We have no way of knowing what the future will bring; we can only observe the results of the current effort.

The infinite game is about our children's character development and the traits they bring into their daily life.

* What happens when they're having a bad day and do poorly on a test?

* Or they apply for a job and aren't hired?

* How skilled are they at problem-solving, coping, and asking for help?

Sometimes their qualifications aren't enough and won't be enough.

Having the grades and recommendations can get them into college. But many students, all the way up to the top-ranked, are washing out. They need more than grades to stay there and to be successful.

They will need more than an impressive resume to get and keep a job.

The infinite game is the bigger picture.

Qualities like determination, resilience, humility, compassion and resourcefulness will serve them well when the unexpected happens. Because it will happen.

It's never too late to help your child develop these skills and be successful at life. All of life. It begins today.
